Bhima Koregaon case: Sudha Bharadwaj to be released on bail on bond of Rs 50,000
The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the plea of the NIA challenging the Bombay High Court order of granting default bail to Sudha Bharadwaj.
Mumbai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Mumbai ruled that advocate-activist Sudha Bharadwaj, accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case, to be released from jail on a cash bond of Rs 50,000 with one or more sureties.
Sudha Bharadwaj's lawyer pleaded NIA court in Mumbai to order her release from Byculla jail today itself. However, the judge said that the order would be issued after receiving the necessary documents and verification.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the plea of the NIA challenging the Bombay High Court order of granting default bail to Sudha Bharadwaj.
Sudha Bharadwaj was arrested and has been in jail for over two years in the Bhima Koregaon case. The Bombay High Court on December 1, allowed the default bail plea of activist Sudha Bharadwaj and directed her to approach Special NIA Court for further proceedings.
Also, the high court said that the activist's bail conditions will be decided by the Special NIA Court. HC also ordered that she should be produced before the Special NIA Court on December 8.
Sudha Bharadwaj is a trade unionist, activist and lawyer who has lived and worked in tribal areas of Chhattisgarh for over three decades. She is an active member of the Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha (Mazdoor Karyakrta Committee).
What is Bhima Koregaon case?
The 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence refers to violence during an annual celebratory gathering on 1 January 2018 at Bhima Koregaon to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon. The violence and stone-pelting by the crowd at the gathering resulted in the death of a 28-year old youth and injury to five others.
