BSY meets outgoing Governor Vajubhai Vala
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa paid a courtesy visit to outgoing Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala on Thursday.
Vala has been 18th from 1st September 2014 to 6th July 2021. He served as the Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from 2012 to 2014.
Vala is succeeded by Thawar Chand Gehlot who resigned from the Modi Cabinet on Tuesday. Gehlot will assume charge in a day or two.
Vala courted controversy during the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections. He invited the largest party, BJP to form the government and not the largest post poll alliance consisting of the Congress and the JDS.
He also gave the new Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa 18 days time to prove his majority in the house. His decision was opposed by all non-BJP alliance parties , and the Congress approached the Supreme Court.
Supreme court decreed that in case when no coalition/party has clear majority, the governor of the state has the legal power to decide who forms the government in that state.
But, the same court shortened the 18 day time limit given by Vala to Yediyurappa to prove majority, into just 3 days.
