CT Ravi likens 'Halal meat' to Economic Jihad, Bommai refuses to comment
However, the issue hasn't received attention from BJP leaders. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai steered clear of the 'Halal meat' ban called by the right-wingers.
Bengaluru: C T Ravi, BJP General Secretary, has ignited another round of political debate over 'Halal meat' ahead of the Hindu New Year festival 'Ugadi'. Ravi likened Halal food to ‘Economic Jihad’ by Muslims.
However, the issue hasn't received attention from BJP leaders. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai steered clear of the 'Halal meat' ban called by the right-wingers.
Bommai said: "Many outfits will be banning something or the other. So, we know what to respond to and what to not respond. Where there is no need for attention, we won't pay attention".
Also, Education Minister BC Nagesh played down the statement of CT Ravi.
"There's nothing that government can do in the matter of Halal meat. It's a religious practice and some people believe in it. Halal is not the subject that comes under the purview of the government", said BC Nagesh.
Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that the government should act against those who are instigating people not to conduct business with Muslims.
What is Halal meat?
Halal is Arabic for permissible. Halal food is that which adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the Koran.
The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, dhabiha, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe.
