Former Mumbai top cop Param Bir Singh joins probe into extortion case
Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh reached the office of Crime Branch Unit 11 in Kandivali to join the investigation in Goregaon alleged extortion case on Thursday.
Mumbai: Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh reached the office of Crime Branch Unit 11 in Kandivali to join the investigation in Goregaon alleged extortion case on Thursday. He was declared as 'absconding' by a Mumbai court.
Early this week, the Supreme Court granted former Param Bir Singh protection from arrest and directed him to join the investigation. Singh had told Supreme Court that he was ready to appear before CBI within 48 hours.
The apex court agreed to hear Param Bir Singh's plea and issued notice to the Maharashtra government and CBI and posted the matter for hearing on December 6.
Singh's advocate told the court that his client was very much in the country and not absconding. He argued that Singh was hiding as he faces threat to his life from Mumbai Police.
"Shocked to know that the man (former Mumbai CP Param Bir Singh) who served as Police Commissioner of Mumbai and Thane, held important posts feels a threat to his life", Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse told news agency ANI.
