Over 30 students have been denied permission to attend the classes after they enter the college wearing hijab. Bhanarkar’s college in Kundapura town in costal Karnataka.
Students have continued to protest outside the college gate on Saturday, though the college has declared a holiday after hijab row gets triggered in the city.
Bhandarkar’s college principal has issued a circular stating that "Girl students are permitted to wear the scarf inside the campus, however, the colour of the scarf should match with the dupatta, and no student is allowed to wear any other cloth inside the campus including the college canteen".
But the row has suddenly erupted after the government first PU college has refused the students to wear hijabs. Hijabs are allowed in a few aided colleges in the state. There are no specific rules as such prohibiting the hijab inside the classrooms. However few unaided colleges have strictly followed the dress code on the campus and strictly implemented uniform rules.
Now the state government is contemplating bringing legislative support to bring dress code in the colleges, following pressure from BJP MLAs and RSS.
Meanwhile, few BJP legislators and MPs, have openly opposed the wearing of hijab on college campuses. Few hardcore saffron party MLAs have said that those who wear hijabs should go to Afghanistan or Pakistan. BJP government will not allow them to wear hijabs in the colleges, they stated.
