Kannada poet, writer Chandrashekhar Patil passes away in Bengaluru
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the writer will be cremated with full state honours.
Bengaluru: Noted Kannada writer, poet and public intellectual Prof Chandrashekhar Patil (Champa) passed away after a prolonged illness in Bengaluru on Monday.
Hailing from Haveri, he served as a professor in English and produced commendable works in Kannada literature. He was a renowned figure of the Progressive Movement in Kannada literature. He founded and edited a literary magazine ‘Sankramana’ for over 55 years.
Champa was chairman of the Kannada Development Authority and President of Kannada Sahitya Parishat. Also, he was the president of the 83rd Kannada Sahitya Sammelan held at Mysuru in 2017.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the writer will be cremated with full police honours.
Speaking to media persons he said, our popular 'Champa' has left us. His writings with independent thought were sharp. He used to hold a mirror to the system through his insightful presentation of the issues.
Bommai said, "Champa was close to my father, and also, he was a guiding force to me. His passing has left a void in the literary world. May God give strength to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss."
