PM Modi's security breach: Supreme Court sets up independent probe committee
Also, the court asked both the Centre and Punjab government not to go ahead with their inquires in the matter.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to set up an independent committee, to be headed by a former Supreme Court judge, to probe Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security breach in Ferozepur, Punjab, last week.
According to news agency ANI, the apex court proposed to include DGP Chandigarh, IG National Investigation Agency (NIA), Registrar General of Punjab and Haryana High Court, and ADGP (security) of Punjab, in the independent committee to probe PM Modi's security breach.
Also, the court asked both the Centre and Punjab government not to go ahead with their inquires in the matter.
Amid political wrangling over the security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Punjab, the Charanjit Singh Channi government constituted a high-level committee to investigate the matter. Parallelly, the Centre constituted a 3-member committee led by Sudhir Kumar Saxena, secretary (security), Cabinet Secretariat. The two other members were Balbir Singh, Joint Director, intelligence bureau, and S. Suresh, IG, special protection group (SPG).
PM Narendra Modi cancelled his scheduled visit to Punjab's Ferozepur to address a rally on Wednesday, last week. He landed at Bathinda on Wednesday morning from where he was to go to the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala by helicopter. Due to rain and poor visibility, the Prime Minister waited for about 20 minutes for the weather to clear out. Around 30 kms away from the National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala, when the Prime Minister’s convoy reached a flyover, it was found that the road was blocked by some protestors.
"The Prime Minister was stuck on a flyover for 15-20 minutes. This was a major lapse in the security of the Prime Minister," stated the Home Ministry.
