Mumbai:  Legendary playback singer  Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, aged 92, passed away on Sunday due to multi-organ failure after more than 28 days of hospitalisation post- COVID-19.   

Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating her at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital, said, "It is with profound grief that we announce the sad demise of Lata Mangeshkar at 8:12 am. She has died because of multi-organ failure after more than 28 days of hospitalisation post COVID19." 

Often called the "Nightingale of Bollywood", Mangeshkar's extraordinary career spanned more than half a century and she recorded thousands of songs in 36 languages.

She was the recipient of three National Film Awards, 15 Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, two Filmfare Special Awards, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and many more. In 1974, she became the first Indian to perform at Royal Albert Hall, London.

Soon after the news of Lata Mangeshkar’s death, several fans, politicians, and celebrities took to Twitter and paid tribute to the legendary singer.

President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the passing away of singing legend Lata Mangeshkar. He tweeted, "A Bharat Ratna, Lata-Ji’s accomplishments will remain incomparable."

Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi expressed grief at the demise of Lata Mangeshkar.  "An era has ended today. Lata Ji will always be an inspiration for generations," she said.

Pakistan Cricketer Babar Azam said in a tweet, "End of a golden era. Her magical voice and legacy will continue to live in the hearts of millions worldwide. An unparalleled icon! RIP Smt. Lata Mangeshkar Ji."

Lata Mangeshkar’s mortal remains will be kept at Shivaji Park at 2:30 pm today for public darshan and the legendary singer will be accorded a state funeral later in the evening.

PM Narendra Modi will reach the funeral ground at around 5:45-6:00 pm today, after which Lata Mangeshkar Ji's last rites will be conducted at around 6:15-6:30 pm.
