Navjot Singh Sidhu demanded public execution of sacrilege accused
Politicians have not condemned the lynchings, but they have strongly condemned the incident of sacrilege and demanded thorough probe.
Chandigarh: Political parties have tight-lipped over alleged lynchings after alleged sacrilege attempts the Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu demanded public execution of those two accused of desecrating religious texts.
Addressing a rally at Malekotla on Sunday, PPCC Chief said that the alleged sacrilege has hurt the sentiments of the people, he demanded that the accused in such cases must be hanged publicly. Mr. Sidhu alleged that it was a conspiracy against one community, some fundamental forces have tried to disturb public peace and harmony in the state, he alleged.
However, political leaders of other parties have more cautious while giving the statement, considering the Assembly elections.
Political parties have strongly condemned the sacrilege incidents, but they have not condemned the lynchings of the accused. Meanwhile, police have not registered an FIR against the mob who killed two accused. The initial enquiry has been found that the accused have entered the Golden Temple for theft.
Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, too, has slammed the alleged sacrilege attempts, but chosen silence on the lynchings. The Chief Minister yesterday visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where the first incident took place.
Later the Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi tweeted that the matter will be "thoroughly probed to unmask real conspirators". He also urged people to be "vigilant" and "take care of all religious places/institutions".
Sacrilege cases, which was a key issue in Punjab's last Assembly polls too, has yet again taken centre stage in the poll run-up. A faction within the Congress has also accused the erstwhile Amarinder Singh government of failing to address the last series of alleged sacrilege incidents.
