Somanath will be the third scientist from Kerala heading ISRO, earlier, G. Madhavan Nair and Dr. K.Radhakrishnan headed the ISRO.

Rocket scientist Somanath is the new ISRO chairman

New Delhi: Senior rocket scientist S. Somanath has been appointed as tenth Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Secretary to the department of science. He was serving as the director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvanthapuram.

Somanath is hailed from Alapuzha Thurvoor, he will replace the incumbent Chairman of ISRO, K. Sivam, his term will end on January 14.

Somanath, a mechanical engineering graduate from TKM College Engineering, Kollam and master’s in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

He had joined ISRO in 1985, has immensely contributed to the design of the launch vehicles, Somanath was instrumental in developing GSLV Mk-III launcher. He has also contributed to developing PSLV in ISRO.
