Roopa Ganguly sheds tears over the law & order situation in West Bengal

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party Rajaya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly broke down while speaking about the violence in West Bengal’s Birbhum district in the Rajya Sabha today.

In Bengal’s Birbhum, eight people were burnt to death, including three women and two children. The former actress demanded President Rule in West Bengal. She said that this was not just an isolated case but that mass killings were happening and people were fleeing the state in fear. The state is no longer liveable, news agency ANI quoted her.

The Calcutta High Court today referred the inquiry into the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation after dismissing a request by the Mamata Banerjee administration not to hand it over to the central agency. The court had demanded a report on the violence from the government within 24 hours.

The killers are being shielded by the government. There is no other state in which the government kills individuals after gaining power. We are all humans. She revealed in an emotional tone that she doesn't believe in "cold-blooded politics " in the Rajya Sabha.

In Bogtui village, eight people, including two children and three women, were killed by a violent mob after locking them inside their homes. The miscreants set fire to their houses on Tuesday, and it is said that all those who died belonged to the same family.

Sources said that the attack was in retaliation after a local Trinamool Congress leader was killed in a crude bomb attack.

The Bengal government had formed a special investigation team (SIT) to look into the incident, and around 20 people have been arrested so far.

Chief Minister Banerjee on Wednesday visited the violence-hit village, and the BJP central team and West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Choudhary also visited the village. They spoke to the victims.

Following the assassination of Trinamool Panchayat deputy chief Bhadu Sheikh, the violence escalated in the village. According to the sources, his sons are among the suspects apprehended by authorities. Several political heavyweights, primarily from the BJP, have visited the area with a television team since Tuesday.
