Six airbags mandatory to entry level vehicles in India soon

New Delhi: Minister of Road, Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari has favored for mandatory fitment of six airbags for all cars,
Mr. Gadkari is advocating to make vehicles in India to safe and he already implemented mandatory fitment of two airbags in four wheelers, now pressing for six airbags in all types of car for safety of the passengers.
Mr. Gadkari is determining for the progress of India auto sector and setting for his ambitious targets like 100 percent electrification and adopting alternative fuel to four wheelers to reduce dependency on fuel. He has called for usage of CNG or ethanol. Now he is targeting to fix more safety of the passengers by fixing six airbags mandatory in the cars.
There is an argument that sales of entry level models get impacted if six airbags made compulsory, they have revise the cost in price sensitive market. Report said that fitment of additional four more airbags for rear seat passenger will cost around Rs. 8000 to Rs.9000. An airbag generally costs Rs.1800 and modification in the structure of rear seat will cost Rs. 500, says report.
However according to industry estimation the fitment of all six airbags to entry level vehicles would increase the cost of Rs. 30000 including labour and tools.
Mr. Gadkari suggested for mandating six airbags in the cars and had said that in the interest of passenger safety.
Mr. Gakari has appealed all Private Vehicle Manufacturers to compulsorily provide a minimum of six airbags across all variants and segments of the vehicle.
In the developed market, vehicles have not fit the side airbags as mandatory fitment, but they do play a crucial role in meeting the crash test and safety requirements
