Bengaluru: Hollywood star Will Smith finally won his first Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard. This was his first Oscar, nearly twenty years after his first nomination.

The Pursuit of Happyness actor hit headlines before receiving the award for allegedly smacking presenter Chris Rock after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who is suffering from alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.

Smith’s performance in King Richard was his third Oscar nomination, after Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness.

King Richard is a biographical film about Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams. Richard Williams was not only the sisters' trainer but also a staunch supporter.

According to the sources, Williams took tennis lessons from a man known as "Old Whiskey," and after witnessing Virginia Ruzici play on television, he vowed his daughters would be tennis players. Williams once stated that he devised an 85-page plan and began teaching Venus and Serena when they were just four and a half years old, taking them to public tennis courts to practice.

Williams later stated that he felt he took them too young and that the age of six would have been more appropriate. In 1995, Williams took his girls out of a tennis programme and began coaching them himself. Within a couple of years, they were winning grand slam tournaments.

The King Richard film was directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green.
