All gates of Nanak Sagar Dam in Uttarakhand's Udham Singh Nagar opened following a rise in the water level due to heavy rainfall in the state.
"PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister have been briefed on the current situation in the state. Houses, bridges etc. have been damaged in many places. 16 people have died so far. Three helicopters to be deployed for rescue operations", Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami told news agency ANI.
PM Modi assured Dhami of all necessary help to deal with the situation. Modi also spoke to Union minister Ajay Bhatt, who hails from the state.

The state government has advised Chardham yaatrees (pilgrims) not to proceed to the Himalayan temples till the weather improves. Chardham pilgrims who arrived in Haridwar and Rishikesh by Sunday have been asked not to proceed further till the weather improves.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Uttarakhand with a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state on Monday. "Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls very likely at isolated places over Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh," the weather department said in its daily weather bulletin issued on Monday morning.
