Anurag Thakur urges wrestlers to end protest, asks to have "faith in law and order"

Sports Minister Anuraga Thakur on Sunday urged the wrestlers to end their 22-day-old protest and asked them to show faith in law and order. The Union Minister also informed that Delhi Police has filed two FIRs and is also recording statements in the matter. Several top Indian wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshee Mallik have been protesting at Delhi's Jantar Mantar since April 23, demanding the removal of WFI President Brij Bhushan Singh on sexual harassment charges.

Speaking to reporters in Hamirpur, Thakur said, “The committee was formed, and their concerns were also heard. An ad-hoc committee has been formed to start the day-to-day working of the Wrestling Federation by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Trials have also started for athletes,"

"Supreme Court has given its judgement. Delhi Police has also registered an FIR and is recording statements. The magistrate is also registering statements. They must have faith in our law and order and end their protest." the Sports minister added

Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on April 24 had announced that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will form an ad-hoc committee to conduct elections for the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) within 45 days of its establishment. The committee will be responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the WFI, including athlete selection and registering players for participation in international events.

Subsequently, Indian Olympic Association(IOA) on Saturday debarred all outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials from undertaking any administrative duties.

Reportedly, the ad-hoc committee has taken full control of the Wrestling Federation of India and all matters related to the day-to-day functioning of WFI are expected to be performed by the newly appointed committee. The Wrestling Federation of India has not been disbanded but doesn't hold any executive power. According to reports, administrative powers will be given back to WFI after the elections are completed and the newly elected officials take charge of the federation.

However, the protesting wrestlers say they will not budge from Jantar Mantar until they get justice against Brij Bhushan Singh. Welcoming the IOA decision, Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia said, ''This (IOA decision to dissolve WFI) is the first step in our fight for justice. Our fight has begun in right earnest, it's a victory for us... and we will continue or fight until we get justice,''

Meanwhile, Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat has said that the wrestlers will personally deliver letters or send e-mails to all women legislators from the ruling BJP.
