Tokyo Olympics: Lovlina Borgohain assures Bronze Medal in women's boxing
Tokyo: Bronze medal is assured in Women's Welterweight (64-69kg) category boxing after pugilist Lovlina Borgohain defeated Chinese Taipei's Chin-Chen Nien 4-1 in the quarterfinal match.
Lovlina won the match via a 4:1 split decision. Lovlina had won the first round 3:2 with three out of five judges giving the verdict in favour of the Indian boxer. She dominated the next round and judges awarded Round 2 unanimously in her favour. In the third and final round, Lovlina secured a 4:1 won and sealed a place in the semi-finals.
Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur congratulated Lovlina on her victory. The minister said, " has entered the Semi-Finals! Well done Lovlina Borgohain, what amazing news for India to wake up to today! We’ve been glued to the TV screen watching you in action".
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Lovlina. "This is a BIG punch. You continue to make us proud #LovlinaBorgohain and keep India’s flag high & shining at #TokyoOlympics2020. Well done," said Sarma in a tweet.
Lovlina will take on Surmeneli Busenaz in the semifinal match on August 4. Surmeneli Busenaz secured a spot for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo through her performance the 2021 European Qualifying Event in Paris, France.
