Tokyo Olympics: Mary Kom loses to Columbia's Ingrit Valencia
Tokyo: In a heart-breaking exit, World Champion MC Mary Kom lost to Ingrit Valencia, 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist, 3-2 in the Round of 16 in the Flyweight (48-51kg) category boxing match.
Mary Kom won the second round in her favour but couldn't beat Ingrit Valencia in the first and last round. The third round witnessed stiff competition between the two as the clock ticked away.
The two pugilists last faced each other in the quarterfinals of the 2019 World Boxing Championships. Mary Kom had won the bout. But Ingrit Valencia avenged the defeat in the Round of 16 today.
A six-time world champion, Mary Kom is regarded as the greatest woman boxer. She won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Games. Also, Ingrit Valencia is no ordinary opponent. She is one of the popular faces in boxing in Colombia. She made history in Rio by becoming the first woman to win a medal at the Olympics.
