Former Manipur Congress chief joins BJP

New Delhi: Ahead of assembly elections, former Manipur Congress chief Govindas Konthoujam joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Manipur CM N Biren Singh.

After fomally joining the BJP in New Delhi, Govindas Konthoujam said, "Next year state elections are due in Manipur, and I will work dedicatedly for Bharatiya Janata Party in those elections".

Govindas Konthoujam is a former minister and six-time Congress MLA from Bishnupur, Manipur. Konthoujam was also the chief whip of the Congress Legislature Party. He was appointed MPCC president in December 2020.

Last month, Govindas Konthoujam resigned as Manipur MLA and from the primary membership of MPCC. While tendering his resignation letter from the party's primary membership at the Congress Bhawan in Imphal, Konthoujam said he had taken the step due to "personal reasons".
