K'taka Cabinet approves renaming of Mumbai-Karnataka as Kittur Karnataka
Karnataka Government on Monday renamed the Mumbai-Karnataka region of North Karnataka as 'Kittur Karnataka' on Monday.
Bengaluru: Karnataka Government on Monday renamed the Mumbai-Karnataka region of North Karnataka as 'Kittur Karnataka' on Monday. Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister JC Madhuswamy today announced the renaming of the region.
It was a long-pending demand of pro-Kannada organisations to rename the Mumbai-Karnataka region as Kittur-Karnataka.
Last month, after inaugurating the Chennamana Kittur Utsava at Kittur, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai had said the next cabinet meeting would clear the proposal. His predecessor BS Yediyurappa had renamed Hyderabad-Karnataka as Kalyana-Karnataka.
The suffix 'Kittur' is the name of a taluka in the Belgaum district that was ruled by Rani Chennamma in the early 19th century. She fought against the British East Company to protect her chiefship.
