New Delhi: Aadhaar card is not mandatory for registration on the CoWIN portal for COVID-19 vaccination, the Centre told the Supreme Court that on Monday.

The Ministry of Health and Family informed the apex court that one of the nine identity documents including passport, Driving Licence, PAN card, Voter’s ID Card, Ration card can be produced for vaccination.

A Bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Surya Kant was hearing a plea filed by Siddharthshankar Sharma who claimed that the Aadhaar card was being mandatorily insisted upon for administering COVID-19 vaccination on the CoWIN portal.

Last year, Co-WIN had developed a new API called ‘Know Your Customer’s/Client’s Vaccination Status’ or KYC-VS. To use this API, an individual needs to enter his/her mobile number and name.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the CoWin (Covid Vaccine Intelligence Work) app on January 16, 2021.  The application, developed by the central government, is essential to get enrolled for receiving the vaccine shots.

The registration was mandatory, with at least one of the government-issued photo identity cards being required for completing the enrollment process.
