Bell Bottom falls to the bottom at box office

The box office estimates of Bell Bottom that released on Thursday has been very disappointing, according to trade analysts.

The net collection for the opening day of the Akshay Kumar starrer is estimated at Rs 2.6 crores. The film was released in around 900 screens across India and the average collection per screen for the first day is a meager Rs 28,000. The occupancy was around 15 per cent, according to most sources.

This makes Bell Bottom one of the worst performers on an opening day. The film is affected by the after-effects of the second wave of the Covid pandemic.

Most of the theatres, especially the single screens, are not open and the multiplexes are operating on 50 per cent occupancy. This is the first big star film to release after the second wave. Even then, the dismal attendance for what was touted as a 1980s anti-terrorism thriller has failed to enthuse the audience.

Films in Tamil and Kannada like Master and Robert have fared far better than the all-India film Bell Bottom. This could be a lesson to all the films portraying themselves as 'pan India' films. Films with a dedicated language audience could perform better at the box office. The failure of Bell Bottom also casts a shadow on the other Hindi films that were gearing up for release this year itself. If they start avoiding 2021, this year could be the worst ever for the film industry.
