Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 Reopens, IndiGo, SpiceJet Shift Operations
After extensive upgrades and renovation work, Delhi’s revamped Terminal 1 (T1) at Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to reopen today.
Notably, Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport had been closed since June 28, following a roof collapse caused by heavy rains, which tragically resulted in one death and six injuries. The new terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 10 earlier this year.
During the closure of Terminal 1, airlines redirected their flights to Terminals 2 and 3. IndiGo, the primary carrier operating from T1, transferred approximately 80% of its flights to these terminals, while SpiceJet handled the remaining flights.
The reopening of Terminal 1 is a significant part of Delhi Airport’s Phase 3A expansion project, which aims to increase the airport’s overall capacity and improve the passenger experience.
Major Airlines Return to Terminal 1
With the reopening, both IndiGo and SpiceJet will resume a large portion of their operations at Terminal 1. Starting from August 17, SpiceJet will operate 13 flights from T1, while IndiGo will resume 34 flights from September 2, 2024. This strategic redistribution of flights is expected to reduce congestion at Terminals 2 and 3, offering a smoother experience for passengers
Cutting-Edge Facilities
The revamped Terminal 1 promises to deliver a more seamless and comfortable travel experience for passengers. A highlight of the new terminal is the introduction of the “Queue Buster-Mobile Check-in service,” which allows travellers to bypass long lines at check-in counters. Additional innovations include
- Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS)
- Individual Carrier System (ICS)
- Common Usage Self-Service (CUSS) kiosks
- Self Baggage Drop (SBD) kiosks.
These technologies are designed to expedite check-in, security, and baggage handling, minimizing delays.
Passengers can also enjoy expanded amenities, such as larger baggage reclaim carousels, multiple entry gates, and upgraded Shop and Dine facilities. These improvements aim to elevate both convenience and comfort within the terminal.
The reopening of Terminal 1 marks a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization of Delhi Airport, offering travellers a state-of-the-art facility designed for comfort, efficiency, and sustainability. With its enhanced services, cutting-edge technology, and commitment to eco-friendly operations, Delhi Airport continues to set new standards for air travel in the region
