Tokyo Olympics: India beat hosts Japan, marches into quarter-finals

Tokyo: Indian hockey team beat Japan in the last match of the Pool- A match 5-3 at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.  

Two goals from Gurjant (brace) and one each from Harmanpreet, Nilakanta and Shamsher assured victory for the Indian team. With the thumping win over Japan, the Indian team finished second in the Pool-A.

The team led by Graham Reid will now play in the quarter-finals after three consecutive victories in the group stage.

Soon after the victory, Punjab Sports Minister Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi announced that the state's hockey players participating in the Tokyo Olympics would now get Rs 2.25 crore individually on winning the gold medal as a team.

The Indians were beaten 7-1 by Australia in their second game of the group stage. The team came back strongly in the matches against Spain and defending champions Argentina. They are currently the only team apart from Australia to qualify from Group A.
