Australian Open 2022: Novak Djokovic wins appeal against cancellation of visa, but rearrested ?

Melbourne: In a piece of good news for Novak Djokovic fans, Australia’s Federal Circuit Court has quashed the government’s decision to cancel the world number one tennis player's visa.

The court has ordered the release of Djokovic from immigration detention immediately. However, the federal government’s counsel said that ministerial powers could be invoked to cancel Djokovic’s visa, according to the Guardian newspaper.  That would mean Djokovic, 34, could again face deportation and could miss the Australian Open, which starts on January 17.

According to Gaurdian Australia journalist Cait Kelly, Serbian Australians have gathered outside Djokovic lawyers office. They have heard a rumour (completely unverified at this point) that he has been rearrested.

Djokovic was sent to detention at Melbourne Airport following Prime Minister Scott Morrison's objection to a medical exemption by Tennis Australia to play in the Australian Open Tennis Tournament.

Against Djokovic’s detentions, his lawyers argued that he received a positive COVID-19 test in December, which makes him eligible for an exemption to Australia’s vaccination rules.
