Tokyo Olympics: PV Sindhu becomes 1st Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals

Tokyo: Ace shuttler PV Sindhu beat Chinese He Bingjiao in the match for a Bronze medal on Sunday at the Tokyo Olympics. With this win, Sindhu created history as the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals.

PV Sindhu had lost nine out of her 15 matches against China's He Bing Jiao. The ace Indian shuttler, with her positive and aggressive game, bettered that record with a win today. Sindhu sealed the victory in two straight sets 21-13, 21-15. Sindhu dominated the opponent throughout the first set, but He Bingjiao came back in the second set.

Sindhu had lost to Tai Tzu of Chinese Taipei in the semi-final match, which she lost 18-21, 12-21 on Saturday.

The only Indian to win two individual medals at the Olympics is wrestler Sushil Kumar. He had won the Bronze in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Silver in the 2012 London Olympics.

President Ramnath Kovind congratulated Sindhu in his tweet, "PV Sindhu becomes the first Indian woman to win medals in two Olympic games. She has set a new yardstick of consistency, dedication and excellence. My heartiest congratulations to her for bringing glory to India".

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said, "Smashing victory for PV Sindhu, she has made India proud. She has done it twice, the second athlete to do so. Today she was dominating in the game. One after the other, whether Mirabai Chanu, Sindhu, & now we're also expecting ( a medal) from Lovlina".
